Mission Statement

The Educational Mission of the Journalism Unit is to foster critical thinking about media institutions and diverse domestic and global audiences, encourage ethics in an international environment, and develop skills in our students for journalism, public relations and other media professions. This mission is both academic and professional; it is about learning, teaching and doing as informed by our core values of excellence, innovation, diversity, integrity and social responsibility. We are committed to supporting high-caliber scholarly research and creative activity in journalism, public relations and other forms of public communication, to liberal arts education, and to professional practice in media work.

Technology/Equipment/Facilities

Franklin Hall underwent a $21 million renovation in 2014 and now features the state-of-the art Beckley TV Studio and Ed Spray Control Room with eight high-definition cameras and high-speed connections to the Mark Cuban Center for Sports Media. We have three audio/video studios for classroom production, six computer labs, and $2 million worth of equipment for student use. Our building houses the campus radio and television stations WIUX and IUSTV, as well as the Indiana Daily Student newspaper.
