Mission Statement

The School of Journalism and Strategic Media at the University of Arkansas prepares students to be innovative and ethical media professionals and scholars in the digital world. The faculty is engaged in scholarly and professional pursuits, bringing fresh approaches to challenges faced by media. Our students gain conceptual knowledge and practical skills from a curriculum that emphasizes critical thinking and mastery of state-of-the-art technology. Students learn the importance of diversity, which requires the inclusion of voices from all economic backgrounds, ages, races, genders, and religions in pursuit of accurate coverage of our pluralistic society.

Technology/Equipment/Facilities

The Sue Walk Burnett Journalism and Student Media Center includes a three-camera television studio and control room with a window backdrop to one of the busiest hubs on campus. The newsroom is a converged, digital environment for all student media. The School also has three multimedia computer labs and ten video editing stations. Among the equipment Journalism students can check out is 30 high-definition video camcorder packages and 10 laptops to complete class projects and assignments.

Internships Accepted for Credit

Students can earn from one to three hours of course credit by registering for JOUR 402V, Internship; however, there are eligibility guidelines: Junior status (completed 60 hours) 2.50 or higher cumulative GPA Completion of 10 hours in journalism.

The School of Journalism and Strategic Media encourages students to supplement their academics with real-world working experiences, and the school provides a structured system that benefits students and employers. Experiential and/or Immersion Programs for Credit

Study-Abroad Options

Graduate Programs

The purposes of the Journalism M.A. program are to refine the conceptual knowledge and skills of graduate journalism students through advanced writing, production and/or theory and methods courses, to offer comprehensive, media-related courses; and to provide expertise in an additional academic discipline.
