Mission Statement

The mission of the School of Journalism and Mass Media is to prepare students for professional employment in the media and for participation in civic life in the context of a liberal arts education. The School fosters understanding of the nature, responsibilities and effects of the mass media while preparing students for professional work, while maintaining relationships with external constituencies. It provides a holistic and integrated program that gives students the range of skills and depth of understanding to make them effective media professionals and citizens of a global society.

Technology/Equipment/Facilities

The School of Journalism and Mass Media offers a television studio used in conjunction with Idaho Public Television. A 24-station PC computer lab licensed with Adobe Creative Suite software was renovated in 2025, and there are 9 Mac and PC computers in editing rooms with Adobe Creative Suite software for editing audio and video. Students in production-based classes can check out audio and video recording equipment, camera kits, lighting kits and other cameras and equipment.

Tracks within Majors

Internships Accepted for Credit

Students can take up to 6 hours in internship credits. The school's internship coordinator works with students to identify acceptable professional internships, fill out the required supervisory paperwork and register for the internship course.

Internships Facilitated

The School of Journalism and Mass Media in partnership with the James A. and Louise McClure Center for Public Policy Research offer legislative internship positions for students interested in reporting on government and public issues. Interns are based in Boise while the Idaho legislature is in session.

Experiential and/or Immersion Programs for Credit

Courses that include service-learning components include Introduction to Strategic Communications, Media Campaign Strategy, Advanced Media Design, Intermediate Film and Television Production, Event Planning & Management, and Cinematography and Lighting. The Advertising Team Competition develops a national advertising campaign in competition with other colleges and universities.

Online Options

The Master of Arts in Emerging Media and the graduate certificates in Media Production and Strategic Media Management are online only programs.

Study-Abroad Options

Multimedia Storytelling Abroad is offered in the summer and gives students the opportunity to explore Eastern European culture thorough a variety of media in countries such as Czechia, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Croatia.
