Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Mass Communication at Southern University and A&M College is to prepare students through a liberal arts education and understanding of the emerging media technology to assume successful careers and further studies in broadcasting, print journalism and public relations, to impact the skills, knowledge, and attitudes most needed and highly valued in journalism and mass communication today. As a teaching unit, the department aims to foster an interactive and supportive environment characterized by diversity, creativity, ethics and critical thinking in the service of democratic ideals through teaching and community service.

Technology/Equipment/Facilities

Students' learning environment include access to multiple computer labs equipped with Macintosh computers, printers, drop down screens, teacher computer stations, digital editing suites, a newly renovated television studio and multimedia news room, podcast capabilities, digital camera and streaming equipment, an innovation lounge, and a multi-media lounge

Internships Accepted for Credit

The faculty of the Department of Mass Communication encourages and strongly supports a program of professional internships for students preparing for careers in print, broadcast journalism, and public relations, both with academic credit and without. The Department does offer 3 credit hours of internship to students.

Internships Facilitated

The prime objective of the department's internship program is to enhance the student's educational experience. It is designed to: Afford media majors an opportunity to practice their academic skills in actual work situations under alert professional supervision. Allow interns to gain professional experience for which they can receive academic credit in their area of specialization. Provide students an opportunity to build up their work experience and portfolios for future job interviews.

Experiential and/or Immersion Programs for Credit

All Southern University students are required to complete 60 hours of service learning for 3 credit hours.

The Department offers a limited number of courses online. However the majority of courses within the degree program are taught in person.
