Mission Statement

“We prepare students to be confident, multi-platform communicators for an evolving media marketplace, with a pedagogical emphasis on active learning and experiential experiences."

Technology/Equipment/Facilities

SJGC is a 100,000-square-foot facility that is home to four multimedia properties: TV 20, WANM 90.5, The FAMUAN, and Journey magazine. These platforms provide students with practical, hands-on experience in the profession. The building houses 15 computer labs and 10 studios, offering ample space for students to hone their skills. Experiential learning is a cornerstone of the SJGC experience, with courses like the PR Agency, Capital Bureau, Advanced TV News, and Documentary & Film.

Internships Accepted for Credit

The unit has an Office of Career Success to assist students with internship placement. For their degree requirement, all Journalism and Public Relations students must complete a 1-credit internship. The internship requires students to work 15-20 hours a week and provide deliverables to the internship coordinator. Students are strongly encouraged to seek additional internships during their academic career.

Internships Facilitated

Internships are vital for enhancing students' practical skills and workforce readiness. With over 100 potential sites, including top companies like Disney, CNN, ESPN, and Bloomberg News, our students are highly sought after for internships and employment. The SJGC internship coordinator monitors the process, ensuring valuable work experience. Worksite supervisors also provide supervision and evaluations. Many students credit these internships as key to securing their first job upon graduation.

Experiential and/or Immersion Programs for Credit

There are two practicum classes offered: MMC 2920 - Professional Development Colloquium, typically taken during the sophomore year, and MMC 4922 - Senior Capstone Colloquium, completed in the final semester. In MMC 2920, students acquire professional skills such as networking and interviewing. The Capstone class focuses on students creating their own websites to showcase their work, with the aim of preparing them for the next phase of their careers.

Online Options

The unit offers face-to-face courses with several online sections such as Journalism 1040E - Language Skills for Media, Journalism 3101- News Reporting & Writing II, and MMC 2000 - Introduction to Mass Media.

Study-Abroad Options

Many SJGC students engage in the university's study abroad program. Additionally, the journalism curriculum is aligned with the EUSA Study Abroad Program in Seville, Spain. The unit is also working on developing more study abroad opportunities for all majors.
