Mission Statement
The mission of the Hubbard School of Journalism & Mass Communication is to improve the practice of journalism and strategic communication through trailblazing advancements in teaching, research and community outreach. We focus on preparing students for careers in the wide variety of specializations within journalism and strategic communication, and on expanding and sharing knowledge of mass communication and its role in society. We do this through teaching, research and outreach that are focused on improving the practice of journalism and strategic communication. We believe in professional preparation and in a liberal education rooted in the arts and social sciences. We are committed to teaching students to think critically and creatively in an environment that is diverse, dynamic, globally aware, interactive and intellectually challenging. We prepare undergraduate students to be leaders in mass communication fields and to be thoughtful, productive citizens in their communities and in public life.
Technology/Equipment/Facilities
Murphy Hall has 7 multimedia classrooms, a 150-seat multimedia auditorium, Digital Media Studios with capability for video editing, digital and analog audio, and labs for imaging, graphics and design, as well as podcast production, the Hubbard Media Hub and Sevareid Library, a multimedia Conference Center, a focus group facility for advertising and public relations design, the Minnesota Journalism Center, and Silha Center for the Study of Media Ethics & Law.

Internships Accepted for Credit
Students can enroll in CLA 3896 Directed Internship course alongside any internship in the field.
Internships Facilitated
Students enrolled in CLA 3896 (see above) work with instructors in the School. The unit also has a variety of specialized programs (offered by application) providing practical experience to students such as Report for Minnesota, Hubbard Reporting Experience, and others. A range of local paid internships are available with internal and external support placing students in agencies and NPOs; there are also paid internships at the University including through the School’s student agency, Backpack.
Experiential and/or Immersion Programs for Credit
The School offers practicum courses at the Star Tribune, Pioneer Press, KSTP, Fox 9, KARE 11, WCCO-TV and MPR/APM. Strategic communication campaigns capstone classes apply knowledge and skills learned with Twin Cities clients. The unit has a strategic communication case competition team, and a for-credit National Student Advertising Competition course
