Mission Statement

To prepare students with ethical values, life-time communication and intellectual skills, as well as for successful careers in the professions represented by the school's undergraduate departments and graduate degree programs.

Technology/Equipment/Facilities

The school specializes in providing immersive hands-on experiences. Through required courses and internships, state-of-the-art technology, studio and content creation spaces and our student-run media, our students learn by doing. In Journalism, you can work for the North Texas Daily, Hatch Visuals or DCTV. In advertising or public relations, you can be a part of our student-managed agencies SWOOP or AGenZ, or Gravitas, the student ad team that participates in the NSAC Competition.

Tracks within Majors

Within the BA in Journalism, there are five concentrations: broadcast and digital journalism, digital and print journalism, photojournalism, public relations and sports journalism & communication. Advertising is a separate degree.

Internships Accepted for Credit

Students gain additional experience and credit for up to 3 semester hours through required internships at newspapers, magazines, book publishers, television and radio stations, web companies, advertising and public relations agencies, and large and small businesses throughout the Dallas–Fort Worth region and the nation. The Mayborn internship program maintains strong ties with industry leaders in the Dallas-Fort Worth region, which provides students with excellent networking opportunities.

Internships Facilitated

Experiential and/or Immersion Programs for Credit

The Mayborn School offers specialized reporting classes such as our recent award-winning Border Reporting class that took students to McAllen, Texas to report on issues in border communities. The Ad team is also an immersive class where the students work on a global client campaign for the National Advertising Student Advertising Competition.

Online Options

We offer several classes online at both the graduate and undergraduate level. Additionally, our MS in Digital Communication Analytics can be taken entirely online and targets the working professional who wants to learn more about analytics in their industry.

Study-Abroad Options

The Mayborn faculty lead Study Abroad programs to destinations such as England, Spain, Japan and Mexico

Graduate Programs

The Mayborn School of Journalism offers three graduate degrees: MA in Journalism, Master of Journalism and MS in Digital Communications Analytics. Students can also pursue Graduate Academic Certificates in Narrative Journalism, Interactive and Virtual Digital Communication and Public Relations.
