Mission Statement

The mission of the School of Journalism and New Media is to lead and excel in the education of a diverse body of students in journalism and integrated marketing communications. Grounded in truth, freedom of expression, responsibility and integrity, the faculty and staff will: 1. Prepare students to succeed in an ever-changing, integrated and global media landscape. 2. Encourage research and creative work to add to the body of knowledge and to serve the journalism and communication professions.


Technology/Equipment/Facilities

The school is located in Farley Hall. Student Media is in Bishop Hall. Farley includes two auditoriums, one 45-seat class, one 36-seat class and five 20-seat computer labs. All are equipped with full AV and there are 100-plus Macs for student use. Farley also includes a well-stocked A/V equipment check-out room. The Student Media Center includes an HD television studio and control room, an FM radio studio and control room and 30 Macs for production of digital, print and A/V content.

Tracks within Majors

Journalism requires an emphasis in TV & Video Storytelling, Multimedia Journalism, Visual Journalism, Sports Media or Political & Social Justice Reporting. There are 8 optional specializations: social media, fashion media, sports communication, PR, magazine media or health comm. Integrated Marketing Communications has one emphasis and 8 optional specializations: social media, fashion media, sports communication, PR, magazine media or health comm.

Internships Accepted for Credit

Up to 3 hours of academic credit may be earned via working in a degree-related paid or unpaid professional internship.

Experiential and/or Immersion Programs for Credit

Students may participate in school or university immersion programs such as Study Abroad, Study USA, Washington Internship Experience or New York Internship Experience for academic credit. The school organizes special event travel for students, weekend news reporting trips in the region, and has defined courses in which IMC or BAJ students prepare marketing campaigns or clients, research and produce documentaries or traditional news programs, interactive web content and magazines.

Online Options

Courses sufficient to achieve a Minor in Journalism/IMC are available online. No degree is available fully online, More than half of the school's courses are offered both online and in traditional delivery. iStudy options are available for some courses.

Study-Abroad Options

Both the University and the School offer Study Abroad options. The University offerings are vast and may include transfer credit toward an SoJNM degree. School-based programs allow students to earn 3-6 hours of academic credit for engaging in IMC and journalism work. Recent destinations include Italy, Ireland, Czechia, and Ethiopia.
